Hamta Pass Trek – Himachal - 10 Days

Overview

Max Altitude: 4551 Mts. | Best Time : Mid June to November

The Hampta Pass trek is located in Himachal Pradesh and the trekking starts from Manali. It might not be the most adrenalin rush giving or the most sought after trek, but definitely it is a trek that will leave you in awe of this beautiful place. The variation in the trails is enormous; scenic landscapes, open green pastures and meadows, glacial valleys, easy access and an exceptional, adventurous and hair raising crossing of the pass makes this trekking expedition to Hampta pass an exciting one. Generally, it takes 4 days to complete the Hampta pass trek, but one more day is further added to the itinerary so as to visit the well-known and striking Chandrataal, a high altitude alpine lake few hours from Chatru.The nearest station is Manali. Therefore, the trip starts from Manali to Chika via Jobra. From Jobra the trek is undertaken by walk. This route comprises the first day. Balu ka Ghera is reached on the second day. You would cross amazing boulders, Gendrame and Rani Nallah on this day.

The third day destination is Shea Goru from Balu ka Ghera via Hampta Pass. You will come across mind boggling and stupendous glaciers, cornice formation and snows all the way along. The maximum altitude will be reached on this day i.e. 14, 100 ft. Day four will start from Shea Goru and end up in Chatru. It is a steady descent on this day. You will witness the valleys of Lahual and Spiti and also the mountain ranges of Pir panjal and Spiti. Next day, we laeave to Chandra tal camp site and camp there for the night. The final day of the trek’s route is from Chandra tal to Manali. FromChandra tal campsite you can visit the infamous chandratal lake, deepest amongst blue shades.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Delhi and drive to Chandigarh (265 Kms/6 hrs)

Morning arrive Delhi airport. Meet our guide and drive straight to Chandigarh. Arrive Chandigarh and check into hotel. Later sightseeing tour of Chandigarh including rock garden and rose garden. Overnight: Hotel.

Day 2
Chandigarh - Manali drive via Basheshar Mahadev Temple (310 Kms/8 hrs)

Morning after breakfast, drive to Manali the valley of Gods. Manali is a combination of natural splendour and rich cultural heritage. Enjoy the Scenic Himalayas and the Beas river from the window of your car. On the way you can have a stop over at Sunder Nagar Lake, Pandoh dam on river Beas and Bhuntar to visit Basheshwar Mahadev Temple. It will take 8 to 9 hours to reach Manali and the distance is 310 Kms. The car will pass through Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi and Kullu on the way to Manali. Overnight: Hotel.

Day 3
Manali : Acclimatize - Local walking tour

The day is reserved for rest in Manali for acclimatisation, which we spend by strolling to the 500 year old Hadimba Devi temple in a dense grove of giant Deodar trees; the charming Tibetan monastery and the colourful vibrant Mall road the main shopping area in town. Overnight: Hotel.

Day 4

Manali (1950m) – Prini (1900m) – Chikka (3100m) 6 hrs. Trek.
Today leaving Manali, we drive 3 km south of Manali on the left bank of Beas River to Prini village, starting point of our trek. We pass through the Prini village and temple located above the village. We climb gradually for 3 hrs. untill arriving at Hamta village and Sethan village. Sethan village is small settlements of early horseman known as Khampas of Tibetan origin. Who are mainly dealt with trekking mules up today. 45-minute walk through alpine forest to the Panduropa, Panduropa is known for the small paddy field – where Pandavas of Mahabharata during their exile, spent a part of time in this region and said to be cultivated crops at Panduropa.

Now we trek 1 hrs. Horizontally through thickly forested area with abundance of flowers untill reaching the campsite of Chikka. Overnight: Camp.

Day 5
Chikka - Jwara (3300m) - Balu Ka Gera (3700m) 5/6 hrs. trek.)

Today leaving Chikka we follow the left banks of Hamta. Later we cross Hamta stream by bridge, another wooden bridge at short distance. Around Chhika some fantastic view of Rocky Mountains. After crossing the second bridge we climb gently to Jwara for 2 hrs walks, we will pass beneath the waterfall. The next adventure is going to be a stream crossing just before Jwara. With the help of Guide and if not, with the help of riding horse you may cross the stream. Now the trail gently climbs to Balu ka Gera campiste. From where we will have first view of our next day crossing of Hamta pass. It’s a beautiful campsite close to crystal clear water. Be aware of Bear in this area by early season trek and late season trek. The area itself is known for Bears Den. Balu ka Gera is known for wild flowers, rocks and caves. Keep exploring surrounding of you for a rare view of Bear. Overnight: Camp.

Day 6
Balu Ka Gera - Hampta Pass (4268m) - Shira Gorh (4000m) 7 Hrs. trek.

A gradual climb begins after Bhalu ka gera (bears den), at a short distance we cross stream and further 1: 30 hrs trail takes us to Hamta pass. From Hamta pass fantastic view of Inderkila, Deo Tibba (6001m) and Indersan (6220m). Which is superb to see? After crossing the Hamta pass, one enters the Lahaul valley. Walk down to the campsite near by the stream. Overnight: Camp.

Day 7
Shira Gorh / Chatru (3100m) 6 hrs.

Cross-stream near the camp and follow the right bank until it joins with the Chandra River. Again, cross the same stream by small wooden bridge. Now follow the left bank of Chandra River. 30 minute later a motor able bridge to be cross to reach at the campsite of Chhatru. Overnight: Camp.

Day 8
Chatru / Chota Dara (3800m) / Batal (4000m) - Kunzom La (4551m) drive 1 hr, Trek to Chandratal (4270m), 4-5 hrs.

It’s a 17 km from Chhatru to Chota Dara. We drive along the right bank of the Chandra River. Along the trail one could see huge granite walls, which are increasingly popular among rock climbers. The color of these rocks is differs to each other. Far across Chandra River, view of Chhota Shigri glacier and some wonderful peaks are mind-blowing. Some small teashops mark the arrival at Chhota Dara. Leaving Chota Dara behind we continue along the right bank of Chandra River. Good view of Bara Shigri glacier on the left side. All above the glacier which is 12 km in length longest in Himachal, peaks of White Sail, Shigri Parbat, and Kullu Makalu where daring mountaineers touch the sky can widely be seen.

Crossing bridge soon after Batal, we climb towards Kunzom la following small stream, which originated above pass. Arriving at pass has a glimpse of Spiti valley, which runs 170 kms towards south. Take a path, which goes to Lake 8 km; approach large meadows – a favorite area with a multitude of shepherd’s huts. Passing and crossing a long stretch of stony ground and small stream arrive at the lake. Across Chandra river most fascinating sight of Samudra Tapu glacier, North Dakka glacier, South Dakka glacier and Silver glacier. Above the glaciers towering mighty peaks of Moulkila and C.B. peaks. Leaving Kunzom we trek to Chandratal which is 8 kms long and has a wide panoramic view of Chandra Bhaga peaks all around. Camp after Chandratal.
Overnight: Camp.

Day 9
Chandera Tal Drive Back To Manali over Rohtang Pass

Morning after breakfast drive to Manali via Rohatang Pass. Arrive Manali and check into hotel. Rest of the day for own activities & shopping. Overnight: Hotel.

Day 10
Manali - Delhi drive (575 Kms/11- 12 Hrs)

Early morning after breakfast drive to Delhi via Mandi, Bilaspur & Panchkula. Arrive Delhi and check into hotel.
Overnight: Hotel.
